And where I was was in my backyard with a partly cloudy sky (with several dark, clear spots) and a moon like a lighthouse.
Not that I'm disappointed. It was gorgeous, and I saw a couple of dozen streaks and flashes. Even if they were mostly faint, it was enough for several wishes. I pointed out to Mike that it's a bit unfair that he gets all the shooting star wishes with the Leonids then birthday wishes immediately afterwars. Double-dipping!
Speaking of which, Mike is but 29 in the United States, but yonder in Australia he is now 30. Here's to a wonderful year! Ah, but my youth-by-extension is lost. We are now a boring couple in our thirties with two small sons. Sons, hamsters, what's the difference? At least we named them well. (Phobos and Deimos!)
Yes, the sky was gorgeous last night. There were rings around the moon the like of which Melanie has never sung. When I went back out around 4am, the moon was distant in the west and so bright, and the clouds around it made it look like a sunset on a piece of roadside religious woodwork circa 1981. But much, much prettier. Stunning even. Breathtaking.
And as I looked up in the sky I thought of how the ring-like cloud patterns really made the sky looked curved. It has been a long time since the atmosphere has seemed spherical to me. Dark skies would have made a great show, but I was pleased to have a little bit of everything at its best.
Meanwhile, I discovered the Nasa Human Spaceflight interactive site for seeing when satellites will fly overhead. Possibly even better than HA. (Well, no, just different.) Perhaps I'll see the International Space Station yet.
