Pirouetting at the Ruins
Finally went out and did some geocaching for the first time. (A mere three years after writing an article on it. The article where I begged people to come geocaching with me and no one peeped. Victoria, in some ways y'all did kinda suck at times. Especially now that you have at least 30 caches, and I'm sure not one person remembers the column that tried to put us all three years ahead of this point.)

But I'm not bitter, not at all, because geocaching is every bit as fun as I thought it would be! And I'm not even using a GPS unit! (Unless someone gives me one! Give me one! Unless I go to the casino tonight... let's see, if I win continue to win 55 cents per day for the next 200 days, minus the couple of bucks for gas for each trip, I will have... nothing.)

Still, it can be done without a GPS unit -- sometimes -- and one out of three times today it was, indeed, done. (And will need to be done another half dozen more times in the next week if I'm to have a satisfying presentation on the subject for my Adventure Lit/Film class next week. Maybe I should make a short film instead of a PowerPoint? Maybe I should make a short film and have a special spot in the credit -- complete with twirly zoom fade-in -- with your name on it because you gave me a GPS unit? Have I mentioned how terrific that colour is on you, by the way?)

I put the photos on Flickr, but will post a few here anyway. I'm very glad I got lucky at the "Pirouette at the Ruins" cache because it looked really interesting. (Yes, apparently Las Vegas does have archaeological ruins that are not just the debris of another imploded casino. By the way, the smart money's on the Stardust being the next to go whizz-bang. The Boyd shareholder's report, which I can't find the link to right now, is compelling in this direction..) Warning, there are spoilers from here on out.

What do you think this is? An old fort? Old well? Old potty?

Geocaching Ruins

Imagine my excitement!

Aha!

I conveyed this excitement in the cache's log book:

She Was Here

And left behind a penny (or drachma or whatever ancient Romans used) for someone's future thoughts:

Left Behind

Then I came home and told Mike all about it, and he hopped up and went looking for this cache, which he also found (also without a GPS, also using satellite images and spoiler photos).

Already plotting tomorrow's treks...

CJ

you were ahead of your time. Sorry I didn't geochache back in '02, had I known about it, I would have done it.

Shari

Sniff... damn straight! Hehe! Well, at least Victoria has it going now - I'll look forward to checking out the caches whenever I'm back in town. (Sometime later this decade, at this rate... Oh well.)
