Charlie Chinchilla Bathing Sand

Here's a public service announcement to all dwarf hamster owners: dump the Super Pet chinchilla bath sand or their ^&%%^$%$# "dwarf hamster bathing powder." We now have other options.

Super Pet changed the formula of the chinchilla sand so it is a grimy dark grey and clumpy, sure to turn any white hamster to a dingy shade, plus the quality isn't as soft and fine as before; it's not even as nice as children's play sand that you can buy anywhere and sterilize in the oven.

I take it we're not supposed to mind since they also introduced some entirely crap product called "Bathing Powder" for dwarf hams. Wow, does it suck. Aside from the fine white layer of dust it leaves on the hamster, the critters simply don't like it. You can actually see the disappointment on their faces as they stand in the puddle of powder and wonder what they're supposed to be doing. I ask you: given the general good nature of dwarves, should you ever see them look like someone's just taken away their best seed?

The bathing powder is nonsense. They don't roll for joy in it. They don't drag their MilkBone into it. They don't sit in it to savour their favourite treats. And they definitely don't pee in it, which is one of the best bonuses of the chinchilla sand and its magical ability to potty train most hamsters with zero effort on your part.

Maybe your hamsters like it, but I have sixteen hamsters, and not one of them pays any attention to the bathing powder, including the young ones who never got to try the good stuff.

So thank heck that Charlie Chinchilla Bathing Sand is now easy to buy online in the States. I got mine from Pet Shop Essentials, where they were very quick and very cheerful. Pet Food Direct is also selling it, albeit for a bit more.

The hamsters love it. It's like having the original Super Pet sand back. (Although this brand is more beige than taupe.) In fact, the marshmallows won't get out of the bath! They're clumped together, trying to roll, and having a standoff to see who will leave first so they can really revel. Same with Hammond, Owl, and Helix, who are taking turns pushing each other out of the bath tunnel, although they're mostly willing to put aside territorial differences and sit smushed together just for the glory of the sand's presence. I better buy some hummus or pesto soon so we can install a few extra jacuzzis, so to speak...

So, don't put up with Super Pet's bizarre decision to give dwarf hamsters the exact opposite of what they like. And don't put up with those annoying little sand packets any more. Get a nice, easy to close and store, highly economical canister of Charlie Chinchilla Bathing Sand, and give your hammies the good life.

(I am not a compensated endorser for Charlie Chinchilla products, just a happy customer. However, I have several lovely hamsters, including an agreeable little sponge cake named Elizabeth Joy, who would make excellent spokesmodels for reasonable rates. Call us, babe.)

Thanks so much for this. I have a new dwarf hammie and he doesn't mind the Super Pet sand but I was looking for sand online that's cheaper to buy in larger quantities. The Super Pet kind is over $5 at my local pet store and it only includes a few small packets. I was very upset that it was such an expense (my hammie likes to pee-pee in it too so I have to change it often.) Now I can buy the Charlie brand (and know that it's an even better quality) for much less. Thanks a bunch! The internet can be so wonderful and helpful when pet-owners get together and trade tricks and tips! :)

I also wanted to mention that I found the same product for $7.41 at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Supreme-Chinchilla-Bathing-64-oz-container/dp/B0007A3RVW/sr=8-3/qid=1157467047/ref=sr_1_3/102-9300469-4820961?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden
It's only a few cents difference but if you'll be buying more than one, it'll add up after a few and you'll save a couple of dollars. :)

Well, we didn't really see bathing sand as important or as a need, but since we used Charlie Chinchilla Bathing Sand, it seems as if its a must! The thing is, when we tried dwarf hamster bathing powder, our hamster just pee in it! he didn't seem very happy being placed in the bathing powder too. so, we continued using Charlie Chinchilla Bathing Sand and we seriously feel that they shouldn't gurantee us of having hammies happy to roll in inferior bathing powder or sand.

I just got a dwarf- he's the cutest little boogar I've ever seen, and I just bought him Living World Chinchilla Bath Sand. I've never seen Charlie Chinchilla, but I AM in Canada. Have you tried the Living World brand? If so, how does it compare? I have not even tried it yet and am wondering whether or not I should return it and find some Charlie!!
Thanks!
