Ideas You Want to Steal Right Up

As much as I have always pokemudgeoned the marketing beanheads of the world, I do enjoy clever marketing. I remember once there was an interview with Simon le Bon and he said commercials were his favourite part of watching television.

I really wanted to agree with him. My friends and I dutifully wore our fedoras and panamas and watched James Bond and spoke wistfully of vodka and Sri Lanka, and everything else you had to do back then to earn your Duran Duran cred, including assigning Andy Taylor as the future spouse to the least cool friends in your circle. (Sorry, Josephine. I hope that's not why you murdered that social worker.)

But I just couldn't get behind Simon on the commercial thing. Today I know it might've been because there's a big difference between U.S. commercials and what they show in other countries (Mike, recently: "What? They don't show tits on regular television here? Tits? You're kidding me!"), but it could also be because Simon was a git or a poser or, gah - even now it's hard to admit this, despite his well-established penchant for supermodels, children, and fashion and my love of carbs and rodents - because we just have different tastes.
