Have you used Fichey.com? I've spent five minutes with it today and it has already changed my life. I haven't even used that expression since yesterday, that's how much I mean it. Try it. Play with it. It's neat! When I say it has changed my life, I mean permanently. The old sucky way of using the Internet is so... old! And sucky!
(Yeah. Remember the two-day conference? And then I was running around chatting it up to everyone because, hey nonny nonny, it - like - added two years to my professional growth? Teaching was about to explode to a new level of awesome, just stand back and watch? Okay, well, that ended on Friday, possibly by fourth period when I wrote two referrals and caught two cheaters who happen to be students I already really like, and it was definitely over by sixth period when I had to give eight zeros on the exam because OH MY GAWD people cannot understand why, just because they're done with the test, they can't talk, let alone walk over and sit on a desk and start a conversation, and the whole empowerment buzz was absoeffinglutely kaput by the end of the day, when the parent calls were done.)
But in other news... tonight we went to the Bellagio buffet. How can we afford the Bellagio buffet? On a Saturday? That's an interesting question. Very interesting. But very rude to ask in France, you know. Apparently they're quite tight-lipped over even questions as innocuous as "What do you do for a living?" Did I spell innocuous right? Seems so. Looks wrong.
The buffet was very good, albeit not enjoyed to its potential when one is a vegetarian and one's cohort is so picky/squeamish that he refused to even try the Beef Wellington that landed on his plate, so convinced he is that "guts" are involved. (And now I must look it up. Okay, Mr Pâté-Hatin' Britches was right, but still.)
We picked at our main plates in anticipation of a dessert pigout, although the potato strudel was total yummers. Here's Mike's chocolate raspberry mousse concoction:
And here is Mike:
We parked on the roof so we could justify bringing the pocket camera. Here's the former Aladdin before the meal:
And here it is after, with less tree, but more accidental tilt:
Much as I like to pick on the PH casino for being an abomination, what I saw on the Rio today surely takes top award:
At least, I thought so, until we drove home past the Luxor and saw that its front is currently covered in an ad for Absolut Vodka. Just one more step in their asinine plan to de-Egyptize the pyramid and make it more Britney/LA friendly. Isn't everyone tired of Britney/Lohan/nightclubbing 20-somethings/etc? But what is the new club at the Luxor called? LAX. As in, ell ay ex. Like the airport. The Luxor is dead to me.
What else? This week I drove to, for once quite literally, the opposite (northeast) end of the valley to take the two tests I have to pass to be able to renew my license. I think I did fine on Nevada School Law, but I know I bombed Nevada Constitution. Maybe I should've looked over that part of the study guide for more than 10 minutes this morning. Yes, it's been a busy week, but I've had the study guide since, er, three years ago and Vegas was just a hope in the sky. Luckily I have another chance in November. I promise to feel sheepish until then. If you could see me, I'd have a very Lady Di downcast eyes-thing going on. Unfortunately, it's not very cute without bangs.
Tonight we watched some of the Muppets season 1 DVD from Netflix; will there ever be another prime-time variety show starring vivacious cloth figurines? And will there ever be another version of the DVD set where so many songs aren't cut over "music right disputes"? I think the Jim Nabors episode ends up straining to reach 15 minutes. (Something Nabors had no trouble grabbing back in the day... surPRISE surPRISE!)
Back to the law, and teaching, kind of... have you tried the Naughty American History quiz? I got my guy down to his skivvies only to be told that, guess what?, Johannes Vermeer did explore America, sorry, thanks for playing. What? WHAT? Vermeer spent his whole life in Holland, you click-tease.
