We had breakfast buffet at Green Valley Ranch today. This has always been a solid buffet; not showy in selection (unless you like Mongolian BBQ), but one I'd recommend to a person of any diet without hesitation. Granted, the last couple of dinner buffets have seemed a little bland, but I put that down to my vegetarianism. Luckily I only need a few nice things to make me happy.
Which I couldn't even get this morning. Who ever heard of a breakfast buffet without pancakes? (Or waffles or French toast - some gateway to maple syrup.) And the scrambled eggs? Like they'd accidentally made an omelet and had to cut it into strips. The hash browns were greasy (and this was the only potato selection).
I ended up eating a piece of rubbery quesadilla (Quesadilla? Breakfast buffet? Was it meant to go with the taco meat that was sitting there without explanation, let alone shells or chips?), a biscuit with a piece of (tasteless, not even sure what kind) cheese, and a bite of cheese blintz. The blintz was actually good, but I never crave more than a bite of one.
The sweet section looked like they'd just unwrapped a bunch of cake from the night before. Even Palace Station, the low end of the locals' casino chain totem pole, has a rather nice selection of fresh pastries.
Cold/lukewarm food. Poor selection. Bland/tasteless options. Nothing labeled, leading to unpleasant speculation. This was only 9 a.m., one hour after opening. There's no excuse. Original Pancake House around the corner (in the casino) makes inventive omelettes and pancakes. You can do better, and if I'd known what we were getting into, I'd have dramatically ripped our 2-for-1 coupon into confetti and gone just about anywhere else. Maybe even Excalibur.
Ha. No. There's the devil you know, and then there's the devil you know whose calls you still won't take.
