My Head is Exploding, and I Don't Mean Metaphorically
It seems like I ought to have mentioned this before.
I don't remember when it started. Before Mike emigrated. Before I moved to Las Vegas... pretty sure. Let's say at least five years ago, but not more than ten.
I'm falling asleep, and I hear the door shut. Not the bedroom door, but the door inside my head. Or at least that's what it sounds like. Clickthunk. Decisive.
Maybe it happens once. Maybe it happens again in ten minutes. Maybe it happens again in ten seconds. Maybe it doesn't happen again for ten weeks.
Just the other night, after it happened three or four times, I thought, "you've got to look into this." The sound of doors shutting? I'm not worried about it, but it's just weird.
I've tried to look it up before, but I always get distracted by articles of sleep paralysis. I've had a touch of that in the past, and after a few lucid visits from the hag - so to speak - the sound of a door shutting is almost comforting. Like, oh, my brain's now locked up tight for the night and no weird biological phenomena will now drive a spike of helpless terror into my heart? SIGN ME UP.
But any sleep paralysis incidents were a long time ago, and this clicky-shutty thing is newish and ongoing. And, like I said, weird.
And then - hey! A Metafilter thread explains it all.
At first I wasn't interested because, no, these aren't exploding sounds. (Wow, that must be bad.) But, after reading the article and the MeFi comments (where several people mention the shutting door noises), I feel like I finally have an answer to my pre-zzzzz soundtrack.
Probable causes? Stress and sleep deprivation.
(Oh.)
(I'm really glad timestamps don't show up on these posts.)

I just get the 'falling then JERK' sensation sometimes when I'm falling asleep.
And then there's that recurring dream where all my teeth are falling out. That one really bugs me.
